This is an A2 drawing in charcoal of a stone statue of an old man from Roman times. He looks back at us in thoughtful contemplation - or does he? Is he angry and disappointed or sitting happy and contented with his life? Is he pensive and worried about his death? Has he had a hard life? What really is his story, and come to that who is he? What would he want to be remembered by? Did he ever think that this many years in the future he would be sitting in a black and white two times derivative of his original human form?
The stoney faced man draws out these reflective considerations for our own lives. On any day, in any moment the meaning of his gaze changes with our own life experience, eliciting self-examination and contemplation.
