The Red-Bellied Piranha is native to South America generally in a freshwater habitat, and are known for their aggressive behaviour. Research into their breeding behaviour found that adult piranhas swim side-by-side in small circles, sometimes in opposite directions while keeping their adaxial surfaces close to one another. To us, and our human interpretation this appears to be a courtship display, but a closer look reveals that the adults are actually defending nesting sites. In family and in life we can find ourselves circling just like these piranhas.
